ArmadaCon 2025 Programme

Main Hall - Friday
Theme: Halloween
18:30 - 19:00 Quiz — Bits and Pieces
Dave Trace hosts a spooky quiz, shows bits and goes to pieces.
19:00 - 19:30 Opening Ceremony
Starting with a magical procession from the bar, the Opening Ceremony will introduce our guests, the committee, the programme and everything.
19:30 - 20:30 Books and Witches
Books and witches are like buses, and this Halloween, like the gathering at the start of The Scottish Play, we launch three.
  1. David Wake’s second in The Daughters of Égraine trilogy, The Crow’s Law.
  2. Tracey Norman’s new book, Devon's Forgotten Witches, 1860-1910.
  3. And Guest of Honour, J. R. Steel, and former guest, David Wake’s first in The Dragon Sword Trilogy, which opens with A Dragon in the Title.
21:00 - 22:00 Panel — How smart does a chimp have to be?
Humans have rights and animals don’t. But in a fantasy setting, or an exo-planet, that need not be the case. On a world in which Homo Habilis exists, what rights could or should they have? It’s not just David Brin’s uplifted species, but what about Replicants, Asimov’s robots? Can we switch ChatGPT off? And what might be the impact of such creatures on laws and society? Jonny Nexus, Dr Bob and Tlanti.
Please note: Gaming is available in the dealers’ room throughout the convention.
Don’t forget to visit the Show and Tell exhibition in Fleming.
Main Hall - Saturday
Theme: Costuming. Wear your costumes – there are floor prizes.
10:00 - 11:00 Workshop — Performance
Actors Sam Burns, Mark Norman and Tracey Norman and masquerade winner, James Steel, talk about short-form performances (like Masquerades) with former theatre director, David Wake, watching.
11:00 - 12:00 Talk — The mechanics of lettered artwork
Gwyneth Hibbett, calligrapher and illustrator, and Dawn Abigail, our poet-in-residence, discuss the challenges of creating the microfiction artworks in their Show and Tell exhibition.
12:00 - 13:00 Lunch Break — ArmadaCraft/Rehearsal
The challenge is laid down — a blanket! Organised by Vicky Vagg.
Masquerade walk-through and cabaret planning will be in the main hall.
13:00 - 14:30 Auction
Fantastic, incredible, and must-have items to bid on and buy!
15:00 - 16:00 Talk — What makes a great costume?
Masquerades, re-enactment or hall, bought or home-made? With James Steel, Jaine Fenn and Tlanti. We may even see a white rabbit and a black queen.
16:00 - 17:00 Panel — RPGs: Serious or accept the farce?
Your Star Trek turns into Galaxy Quest? Lord of the Rings ends in a bar fight at Bree with cheese-based puns? Can a noble story of intrigue, adventure and heroism be role-played, or should you just accept the farce? Featuring Sam Burns, Jonny Nexus, James Steel, Gary Loveridge and Dr Bob.
17:00 - 18:00 Panel — Why is humour in SF&F difficult?
Humour SF/F was the genre of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, two of the most popular SF/F authors. Yet, since the 2000s, publishers consider it difficult or unpublishable. Why is this? And how did we get here? Guests Jaine Fenn, Jonny Nexus, James Steel and David Wake discuss this thorny topic.
18:00 - 19:30 Dinner
Yum-yum.
19:30 - 21:00 Masquerade and Cabaret
Our Masquerade returns and we’ve a cabaret, featuring Dawn the Poet!
22:00 - 22:40 Concert — Paradox of Ravens
Back by popular demand with their 80s electric vibe.
Main Hall - Sunday
Theme: Science
10:00 - 11:00 Talk — The Past is an Alien Planet
Dr Bob explains how Earth in the geological past was very different to now, so ‘earth-like’ planets in SF might not be like Earth today with the serial numbers filed off.
11:00 - 12:00 Talk — Exo-planets
Gary Loveridge explains what they are, how we find them and who lives there.
12:00 - 13:00 Lunch Break
ArmadaCrafting
12:00 - 13:00 Turkey Readings
Or the usual awful extracts in Dickson (not the main hall) for those brave enough.

Quantum theory is extremely weird, but so far it passes every test. Find out more here. Perhaps. Martin Lavelle lets the cat out of the box.
14:00 - 15:00 Guest — Jonny Nexus
Our guest talks about his books, his writing and his life.
15:00 - 16:00 Panel — Childhood SF Toys and Games
