Mortal Engines

Post by Geoffrey(aka Jasper) » Wed Oct 16, 2019 10:07 pm

I caught this one the other day. And I was pleasantly surprise given that I'd got the impression it was one of those Hollywood movies where they make a film based on a book and then totally ignore the book.

Well, they do, sorta.

But on it's own merits it's a decent enough movie. It's well acted, the characters are nicely put together and the effects are brilliant. Not perfect though. Some characters seem to get forgotten, some of the plot is telegraphed way too far in advance and other parts felt a bit rushed, and some of the fight sequences are a little too frenetic. But YMMV and IMHO it's not bad.

But it does differ in some ways from the books, some ways, IMHO, fairly significantly and in one or two ways honkingly differently from the books . . . I won't go into details 'cos of spoilers, but one I will share is that the heroine in the movie is a lot prettier than she is in the books.

However one area that the film did really well was in making mobile predatory cities look believable.

Overall, worth checking out.

Edited on further reflection and a quick dipping into the book.
